AWARD-WINNING INDIAN RESTAURANT

CHAAKOO, EDINBURGH & GLASGOW

Chaakoo Bombay Café

Chaakoo - the popular chain of Bombay cafés - recently won the accolade of ‘Best Indian Restaurant in Scotland’ in Deliveroo’s 2024 restaurant awards.

With 2 locations in Glasgow and 1 in Edinburgh, the restaurants have taken influence from the original Bombay cafés (AKA Irani cafés) opened by the Persian & Irani immigrants who arrived in India in the 19th century. These were known for being social hubs frequented by people from all walks of life - from taxi-wallas to CEOs, and hosting everything from first dates to wedding anniversaries. For a reference point, think Dishoom (though minus their ever-popular breakfast options).

Following up their 2023 award from Deliveroo as the Indian restaurant rate ‘Best In Scotland’, this influence is broadly reflected in the menu, from their selection of small plates including a Machali (fish pakora in a coriander & green chilli batter) to their salads (like the House Salad, made of sweet pineapple and mango rocket salad tossed in a mango & chilli dressing).

Chaakoo also cater for those looking for something more substantial, with a selection of ‘Chef's Café Special Curries’ (the Jinga Kushrang stands out as a rich prawn curry cooked with onion, peppers, shaved ginger & tomato), Irani Kebabs made from marinaded and smoked meats / vegetables, along with a selection of traditional favourites such as Rogan Josh, Lamb Madras, and Saag Paneer.

The theme is carried on through the drinks menu which features six cocktails inspired by Bombay café culture, and there’s even a great (if not slightly small) selection of desserts, such as the house Mango & Banana Crumble, and the Gulab Jamon - a hot cardamom sugar dusted doughnut finished with a honey rose syrup.
