Illam - the newest Indian restaurant in Harrogate - opened its doors in October 2023.

Illam specialises in Keralan cuisine, describing itself as offering an authentic South Indian dining experience in North Yorkshire through the work of its expertly trained artisan chefs.

As is traditional with South Indian cooking, seafood features prominently on Illam's menu, with eye-catching dishes including Vembanadan Meen Polichath (an iconic Kerelan dish made with marinated and grilled seasonal fish and onion tomato masala wrapped and flame-cooked in banana leaves), and Kuttanadan Njandu Roast (a Keralan-style crab roast cooked with shallots, onions, tomatoes and coconut oil, simmered in flavourful aromatic Indian spices).

There are also beef, lamb and poultry dishes, as well as various vegetarian options based around aubergines, chickpeas, lentils, and paneer.

Head chef Abdul Majeed previously worked at Tharavadu - an award-winning restaurant in nearby Leeds, and his daughter Rahisa Kombath is customer manager for the 60-cover restaurant.

Starter prices: £5.95 - £12.85
