Dakwala Bombay Canteen - the newest Indian restaurant in Newcastle - opened to diners in the buzzing city centre (and just a 10 minute stroll from Newcastle United FC’s St James’ Park stadium for any football fans visiting) in April 2024.

The restaurant has positioned itself as ‘a love letter from a Bombay canteen’, and has a really clear and exciting philosophy, serving up an authentic culinary journey through the diverse and flavourful streets of Bombay, to capture the essence of the city's rich food heritage - sharing the ‘best of Bombay’.

The menu definitely reflects this across the board with loads of iconic dishes rarely seen in the UK. For example, starters include a Pav Bhaji (a local favourite made of a buttery, spiced potato bhaji served with onion, lime, coriander and a pav bread roll), and Fish Koliwada (an iconic crispy fried fish recipe originating from Sikh refugees in Central Bombay).

There is a huge selection of main courses on offer too, covering clay oven dishes, biryanis, and a large selection of house specials that continue the theme, with eye-catching dishes such as the Smoked Laal Mass (slow-cooked charcoal-smoked lamb chops in a Mathania red chilli sauce, clarified butter, cloves, and yoghurt), and the Chicken Sanju Baba (chicken on the bone cooked with whole spices, saffron, and buttermilk - inspired by a dish served in a the Noor Mohammadi restaurant in Bhendi Bazaar).

There’s also a great option for diners wanting to try a bit of everything, with a ‘Chef’s Tasting Menu’ on offer, giving a selection of ‘munchies, small plates, clay oven delights, curries, sides, rice and breads’ for a minimum of 2 people, costing £25.95.

Founder Rajiv Tiwari spoke of his inspiration behind the new Bombay Canteen with Get Into Newcastle, saying "I am thrilled to bring the vibrant flavours and cultural tapestry of Bombay to the heart of Newcastle through Dakwala. Our menu is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Bombay's streets, offering a symphony of flavours and aromas that capture the essence of the dynamic city. I'm excited to share my passion for traditional Bombay street food with the people and visitors of Newcastle, ensuring there is something on our menu for everyone to enjoy."
