House Boat – the newest Indian restaurant in Derby – opened its doors in August 2024.

House Boat has an ethos of offering diners an authentic South Indian culinary experience, and seeks to immerse diners in the rich and diverse flavours of Kerala - a coastal state known for its lush landscapes and vibrant food culture. Speaking to DerbyWorld, a spokesperson for the restaurant said “There are a couple of north Indian restaurants in the city centre, but no south Indian ones.” The menu is definitely reflective of this, showcasing a carefully curated journey through Kerala's culinary heritage, featuring a wide array of dishes that showcase the region's love for seafood, coconut, and spices.

Among the starters, diners can find unique offerings such as Katrika Porichathu (a stir-fried aubergine-based dish) and Ulli Vada (deep-fried onion fritters eaten as a popular street food snack in Kerala).

Further Keralan favourites are on offer in the main courses, including Meen Pollichathu (marinated fish wrapped in banana leaf and grilled to perfection) and a Boatman’s Fish Curry. Of course, there are also a selection of Dosas on offer too, and the vegetarian options are equally enticing, with dishes like the Okra Pollichathu and the Perippu Curry made from lentils.

Located in the heart of Derby's city centre, House Boat is designed to transport diners to the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. The interior is a blend of modern elegance and traditional Keralan elements, with wooden accents, warm lighting, and an ambiance that evokes the serene beauty of a houseboat gliding through Kerala's waters. Referencing this, the spokesperson said to DerbyWorldWe have customised the interiors so we have shipped everything from India such as the decorative anchors and light fittings.
