NEW INDIAN RESTAURANT
MUMBAI THISTLE, INVERNESS
Mumbai Thistle - the newest Indian restaurant in Inverness - opened its doors in the city centre in September 2023.
Co-owners Karthikappallil George and Donald Mackay launched the restaurant with the aim of bringing the flavours of Mumbai to the Highland Capital, with the menu featuring a number of authentic Indian street food dishes, inspired by George's hometown of Kerala.
Street food features prominently on the menu, with choices ranging from Pakoras and Bhel Puri, to Chola Bhature (a tangy spiced chickpea curry), and even a Scotland-inspired Punjabi Haggis Samosa.
Beyond street food, the menu also includes a selection of curries such as a Mumbai Sea Bass Curry and Chicken Chettinadu, as well as highly recommended vegetarian and non-vegetarian Thalis. They also make and serve house specialty naans, which are stuffed with cheese and different fillings, then folded over and toasted.
Mumbai Thistle also has a 'live' dosa station, where diners can watch the team of chefs make fresh dosa, such as their Masala Dosa stuffed with a flavourful potato masala, and their Mysore Dosa smeared with red chili and garlic paste - all of which are served with medu vada (a donut-shaped lentil fritter), coconut chutney and sambar.
The restaurant is also fully licensed, offering a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including a range of wines, draught and non-draught beers and even a bespokely-created 'Mumbai Thistle' IPA on tap which is gluten-free, and brewed by local Black Isle Brewing Co.
The restaurant is located right by Inverness train station, so is in the perfect spot for people arriving in the city. It's likely to be a big hit too, as co-owner George Karthikappallil has great experience with running restaurants, also running a Thai and south Indian restaurant, Georges, in Inverness, and will be bringing all of this expertise to his newest restaruant.
