NEW INDIAN RESTAURANT
THE GREAT INDIAN, ARCHWAY, LONDON

The Great Indian, a new Indian gastropub in Archway, London, opened its doors in January 2025.
This establishment is an evolution of the popular Hackney-based takeaway of the same name, founded by entrepreneur Aman Dhir, and has transformed the former Prince Alfred pub into a new Desi pub destination.
The menu has been designed to showcase the rich regional diversity of Indian cuisine, with a nod to classic pub fare. Executive Chef Surjan Singh, known as Chef Jolly and a former judge on MasterChef India, has curated a selection of small plates and larger dishes designed for sharing. Highlights include Lamb Ghee Roast on Malabar Bread Tacos, Cafreal Tiger Prawns cooked in the tandoor with cloves, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar, and a Spiced Lamb Shank Pie served with a saffron-cardamom sauce.
The menu also features a section dedicated to 'pao' or 'pav', India's answer to the slider, with fillings such as Goan Portuguese Confit Pork Belly with pickled cabbage and Tandoori Fried Chicken. For those seeking lighter bites, options like Coastal Prawn Mini Dosas and Jackfruit Croquettes are also on offer.
True to its pub roots, The Great Indian offers a wide range of beers on tap, and also has a cocktail menu featuring signature drinks like 'The Great Indian', made with kaffir lime-infused vodka, Sollasa, lime, and curry leaves, and the 'Imli Margarita' infused with tamarind and chilli.
Speaking with Restaurant Online, Singh said “With 28 years of hospitality experience, I’ve drawn from my extensive travels across India, from North to South, East to West, and curated a menu inspired by the diversity of regional cuisines, fusing flavours with a gastropub feel while honouring my Indian roots.”
